Whitby offers a selection of outdoor activities ranging from fishing to charbanc tours. Some of the best are included below with descriptions, ticket prices and book details. Coastal Cycle Trail Coastal Cycle Trail - This cycle route runs for 20 miles between Whitby and Scarborough and affords some inspiring views of the heritage coast; it is one of the most impressive off-road trails in North Yorksihre and allows easy access to Robin's Hood Bay. Starting a few miles outside of the town, the trail follows the route of an old railway line and forms part of the 80 mile Moors to Sea Cycle route, which connects, Scarborough, Whitby and Pickering. Although rocky in places, the trail is generally suitable for families. Bikes can be hired from a number of companies including Dr Crank's Bike Shack as well as the Trailways website. Endeavour Whitby Endeavour Whitby - This company provides guided tours around the bay and coast of Whitby on a replica of Captain Cook's famous ship, The HMS Endeavour. The ship, which was built in 2001 by local craftsman, derives from original drawings and specificaitons. It replaces the original full-size version, which is now moored in Australia. Although only 40% of the original size, great care has been taken to authentically replicate notable elements of the original ship such as hardwood decks, detailed rigging and carved timber mouldings. Trips run daily from Easter to October and bookings can be made on the website.

North Yorkshire Off-Road Centre North Yorkshire Off-Road Centre - Offers a range of off-road vehicles in which to enjoy the challenging terrain around Whitby and the North Yorkshire Moors. These include quad bikes, jeeps and Landrovers. Full and half days are provided with tuitiion from experienced drivers and instructors. There are a number of different courses and routes that are suitable for both novices and the experienced. All afford impressive views of the countryside and provide a safe but challenging environment in which driver of all levels can test their skills. Visitors are also welcome to bring their own vehicles and are only charged £25 for the full day.

Sea Urchin Sea Urchin Whitby Fishing Charters - Chartered Whitby fishing is also provided by this company. Trips are designed with anglers in mind and the boat is fully 'racked up', protecting catches from the sun and providing anglers with space to fish. The Sea Urchin is spacious and can accommodate up to 12 anglers with portable toilets below decks. Trips are £45 per day and do not include equipment such as hooks, leads and bait. However, rods, reels and line can be hired out by the inexperienced. Excursions depart at 7am and 8am during the winter and summer months respectively and last around 10 hours. Corporate days and full boat charters are also available.

Whitby steam bus Whitby Charabanc Rides - Steam Bus tours of Whitby and the surrounding area are offered by this company. The 1931 Sentinel, which is the world's only fully operational six wheeler steam bus, departs from the bandstand on Pier Road and takes visitors on tours of the picturesque town. It passes local attractions such as Whitby Abbey, the Whalebone Arch and also climbs the steep Khyber Pass. Tours of Whitby take place everyday and bookings can be made for special occassions such as weddings. Rides are also available on a 1929 charabanc, which can accommodate up to 29 people.

Whitby Fishing boat Whitby Fishing Trips - Fishing in Whitby is a popular pastime among both locals and visitors. There are a number of companies that offer fishing and angling excursions such as Whitby Fishing Trips. This company offers trips on traditonal fishing boats which last around 10 hours, with 3 hour 'taster' sessions for beginners. These run twice a day during the Spring and Summer months and provide a great introduction to boat fishing. Prices are very reasonable at just £15 per person with tackle and equipment provided free of charge. These excursions prove extremely popular so it is advisable to book well in advance. Uptiding trips are also offered for the more advanced and are available throughout the year. They run from 8am to 4pm and are £30 per person.

Whitby Golf Club Whitby Golf Club - Whitby Golf Club is located to the West of the town and looks out over the cliffs towards Sandsend. Its 18 holes are not too difficult but provide enough of a challenge to keep things interesting. A certain amount is of accuracy is however required to avoid hazards such as Upgang Ravine, especially when coastal winds are strong. The course is open to the public during both summer and winter months. Green fees vary according to season and range from £18 to £26. Prices are lower for under 18's and for games which commence after 4pm. See the website for further information.

Whitby coast Whitby Walking Trails - There are a variety of walking trails around Whitby which allow visitors to truly appreciate the majesty of the region's countryside and coast. The Saltburn to Whitby trail runs for 20 miles along the coast and offers some great views. It's a fairly simple route but care should be taken as some of the cliffs are very high. The shorter Whitby to Robin's Hood Bay trail is also impressive. It starts at the 199 steps and runs along the cliffs of Saltwick Nab and past the smuggler's hole near Black Nab. The route runs for 5 miles so allow for 3 hours or so. Alternatively, try the Whitby to Staithes route which is about 11 miles. A bus which runs from Middleseborough will return those with weary legs.
