Whitby Travel Information

Whitby Harbour Whitby is situated about 230 miles from London and 45 from York. The town has good travel connections and is easily reached by road and rail. Bus services also run from nearby towns on a regular basis, see below for further information. Please note that prices timetables and other information on this page are subject to change.

Travelling to Whitby
By Road - When travelling to Whitby from the North, take the A171 from Guisbrough. This links the towns of Middlesbrough and Scarborough and is also known as the Moors road. It also runs straight to Whitby, through rolling landscape of North Yorkshire. When you see the coast, you'll know your close.

When approaching from the West, South and South West take the A64 from York, then the A169 via Malton. This road travels accross Pickering and the North Yorkshire Moors. Remain on the A169 through Blue Bank and Sleights until you see a round-about connecting to the A171. Take a right and follow it all the way to Whitby. Those travelling from the South West should take the A171 Northbound coastal road from Scarborough - it travels straight to Whitby.

By Bus - Buses 93 and 93A run to and from Scarborough and Middlesbrough on an hourly basis - please note however, that fewer services run on Sunday. Alternatively, take the Yorkshire Coastliner service (buses 840 and X40) which runs between between Whitby and Leeds, via Pickering and York. It takes about three hours and runs seven times per day. http://www.yorkshirecoastliner.co.uk/

By Train - Those travelling South to Whitby its advisable to take a train on the Esk Valley line from Middlesbrough - the views are magnificent: http://www.eskvalleyrailway.co.uk/. From the South, it's easier to get a train from York to Scarborough, then a bus from there to Whitby. Another option is to take the steam service from Pickering to Grosmont. From Grosmont, change trains and take a different service to Whitby itself. Make sure to check in advance, as the service is limited. http://www.nymr.co.uk/
